Different goals and training

Coaching often centers on selected goals and everyday actions. Psychotherapy is provided by appropriately qualified professionals and may assess and treat mental-health conditions.

When therapy may be appropriate

Seek qualified care for persistent distress, trauma-related symptoms, significant impairment, self-harm concerns or other mental-health needs.

Can they coexist?

Some people use coaching for nonclinical goal work while separately receiving medical or psychological care. Be transparent with providers about the support you use.

Choose a clear boundary

A responsible coach should explain the scope of services and refer to qualified professionals when needs go beyond that scope.
